Winners UU Teacher Awards 2026: Marijke de Belder and Jeroen Ooge
Good lecturers deserve recognition. During the OnderwijsFestival on 5 March, the winners of the UU Teacher Awards 2026 were announced. Marijke de Belder took home the title of Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and Jeroen Ooge has been elected Teacher Talent of the Year 2026.
33 lecturers nominated by their students
It is the students themselves who nominate their lecturers through their student associations. This year, student associations nominated no fewer than 33 lecturers for the coveted awards. From these nominations, the jury selected three nominees per category.
Representatives of the student associations came in person to present their nominated lecturer. The jury was impressed by the quality of all the nominations. The two winners demonstrate an enthusiastic approach to education and to the way in which they engage and inspire students. They are able to create a warm, open atmosphere in their classes, and connect theory with practice and the personal experiences of both themselves and their students.

Celebratory ceremony
In a packed Aula the awards were presented as part of the vibrant OnderwijsFestival. Jury chair Dr Gery Nijenhuis addressed the winners, surrounded by proud colleagues, family, friends, and the students who had nominated their lecturers. A truly special occasion to celebrate these lecturers. On 26 March 2026, during the Dies Natalis, both winners will once again be put in the spotlight.
Outstanding Teacher of the Year 2026
Marijke de Belder is an assistant professor in Subject Teaching Methodology Dutch & Dutch Linguistics, where she teaches across three different programmes. With more than ten years of experience in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Cyprus, she brings a broad perspective.
Marijke has a clear vision for education: she writes about the challenges students encounter and gives every student space for their own personal development. Her colour-coded system for differentiation and her use of fictional scenarios make her teaching concrete and personal. Students describe her lectures as a great delight: accessible, humorous, and academically rigorous.
Beyond the programme, she is equally visible: from the Graduate School of Teaching to continuing professional development in secondary education and research into the teacher shortage.
Marijke de Belder was nominated by Noa Heeren of Awater.
Teacher Talent of the Year 2026
Jeroen Ooge is an assistant professor Information and Computing Sciences. Jeroen is an infectiously enthusiastic lecturer who has already left an unmistakable mark on the curriculum in just two years. He has revised several courses and introduced new components, each time with one goal in mind: to get students to genuinely think.
His lectures are never passive. "Listening does not exist" is a well-known saying of Jeroen. He poses questions, incorporates quizzes, and provides energetic lectures. Students look forward to his lectures, even when they would not normally find the subject engaging. He applies his own research into gamification and motivation directly in practice, and takes students' ideas seriously — literally so, as three theses he supervised have already been published.
Jeroen also builds community, with film evenings for both students and colleagues. He is engaged with education around the clock, conducts research into his own teaching, and brings years of experience with him. Demanding and well-loved: a rare combination.
Jeroen Ooge was nominated by Jari van Polen of Sticky.
