Winners of the UU Teacher Awards 2022: David Onnekink and Danny Broere
During the Onderwijsparade on Thursday, 10 March, the winners of the prestigious Teacher Awards were announced. David Onnekink, lecturer Early Modern International Relations (faculty of Humanities) has won the Outstanding Teacher Award 2022. Danny Broere, lecturer Chemistry (faculty of Science) has been awarded Teacher Talent 2022.
The jury chose these lecturers because of their commitment to education and the way they do this, even in times of COVID-19. These two lecturers have a lot of passion for their subject, take the students with them in their teaching and know how to make a connection between academia, practice and education.
This year, the announcement ceremony was fortunately able to take place on location in the University Hall again for the public. It was also possible to follow the ceremony online. Ronald Bleys, chairman of the jury for the Teacher Awards, addressed the winners in the Aula. Colleagues, friends and students of the winners were on location or watched at home via the livestream.
The teachers in the election are nominated by their student associations. These students put a lot of work into the nomination process every year. Some of them were present at this festive ceremony. The official prize ceremony will take place during the University’s Anniversary Day on 26 March.
Outstanding Teacher of the Year 2022
David Onnekink is a lecturer Early Modern International Relations in the Department of History and Art History. In his teaching, he tries to focus on the stories of students and on three goals: to be recognized, to be heard and to be inspired. Students’ stories get together with the stories of history and current events. To his students, he therefore asks the question: what’s your story? His commitment to students is also expressed in his role as tutor coordinator and as bachelor coordinator of the History programme. David Onnekink was nominated by Kes van Achterbergh of Utrechtse Historische Studentenkring (UHSK).
Teacher Talent of the Year 2022
Danny Broere is a lecturer Chemistry within the bachelor and master programme. In addition, Danny supervises science staff and student theses. His teaching is inspired by his own research and he likes to use new teaching methods like game-based learning or flipping the classroom. Danny Broere is nominated by Renate Baarslag of Utrechtse Scheikundige Studentenvereniging ‘’PROTON’’.
