UU is investigating the research culture and quality policy within the Pharmacology research group

The Faculty of Science at Utrecht University (UU) is to set up a committee to analyse whether internal procedures and safeguards for transparency, accountability and oversight within the Pharmacology research group have functioned properly and are appropriately designed. The investigation has been prompted by media reports concerning a member of staff conducting research into energy drinks and alcohol consumption.

Utrecht University attaches great importance to transparency regarding funding, secondary employment and any interests that may affect the independence of research. The article published by De Groene Amsterdammer on 29 July touches upon these principles.

Research and next steps

Utrecht University is taking these reports very seriously. “The report in De Groene Amsterdammer has also raised questions for us,” said Alan Hanjalic, Dean of the Faculty of Science. “In order to answer these questions properly, we wish to conduct a critical review of the academic culture and research quality policy within the research group in question. The investigation will examine whether sufficient attention has been paid to existing internal procedures designed to safeguard a sound academic culture and the quality of research, such as the way in which secondary employment has been handled, transparency regarding funding, and the discussion of potential conflicts of interest.”

“Where there are concerns regarding the research culture and the quality of research, these must be examined carefully. It has therefore been decided, in consultation with the Executive Board, to set up a committee – including representatives from outside our university – to investigate this matter. Independent and transparent research are core values of Utrecht University. We will use the findings not only to better understand and assess this situation, but also to strengthen procedures and practices where necessary.”
