UU and VU discuss potential continuation of some earth science education and research

Utrecht University (UU) is exploring the possibility of continuing certain aspects of earth science research and education of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) in Utrecht. On Thursday, April 3, the VU announced plans for a reorganization within its Earth Sciences Department. If the proposed changes are implemented, some areas of earth science education and research at VU will be phased out.

The Executive Board of UU realizes that the plans for this reorganization are a blow to VU staff and students, and that there are concerns about the loss of unique earth science knowledge and expertise in the Netherlands. Therefore, UU is currently in conversation with the VU to explore the possibility of continuing certain aspects of the earths science education and research of the VU in Utrecht.

Education

In terms of education, UU is investigating whether it is possible, as of the coming academic year, for Amsterdam students of Earth Sciences to start or complete their studies at UU without interruption. 

Research

In terms of research, UU is exploring the possibilities to potentially offer a limited number of researchers from the VU the opportunity to join the Earth Sciences Department. This will involve a small number of researchers, who have earth science expertise unique to the Netherlands and complementary to the expertise in Utrecht. And possibly some research facilities that are needed by these researchers.

Budget cuts

In view of the budget cuts that also affect UU, no short- and/or long-term financial risks will be taken. The Department of Earth Sciences at UU is financially healthy, thanks in part to a consistent and strong annual intake of new students. As a result, there is financial capacity to potentially accommodate a small number of earth scientists from the VU in Utrecht. Additionally, any potential increase in students from Amsterdam will not negatively impact the department or UU’s finances overall.
