Utrecht University start placing 4,600 solar panels

Lot van Hooijdonk alderman of the city of Utrecht and Anton Pijpers, Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of Utrecht University, launched the installation of 4,600 solar panels on roofs of Utrecht University yesterday. The coming months the solar panels are placed on nine buildings of Utrecht University. Together, these solar panels are good for the generation of 1 million kWh of electricity. With this quantity 320 households can be supplied with electricity for one year.

Largest project in Utrecht

Besides the University of Utrecht UMC Utrecht will also put solar panels on their roofs in the coming months. This makes Utrecht Science Park De Uithof the largest area of ​​solar panels in Utrecht and one of the top projects in the Netherlands.

Sustainable ambitions of the UU

Utrecht University aims to generate half of the energy consumption in 2020 in a sustainable way, including thermal storage, the purchase of wind power and the use of sunlight. The placement of the solar panels contributes to a reduction of the CO2 footprint. Moreover, it offers the potential to enhance research and education component of faculties involved.
