Between 13-15 June 2017 iRODS experts from all over the world are coming to Utrecht University. Utrecht has the honour to host the annual User Group Meeting of the prestigious technological iRODS consortium from the United States. This is the first time this event is taking place outside the US. The User Group Meeting is a worldwide network to exchange knowledge and experience on this data management technology. Experts will present the latest developments and innovations in iRODS.
Among the presentations planned are:
- Presenters from Utrecht University and SURFsara.
- Europe’s Collaborative Data Infrastructure (CDI),
- The Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON)
- Scientists and technologists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC’s Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI)
iRODS stands for Integrated Rule-Oriented Data System. It is data management software that links unstructured data to metadata. For researchers who work with large volumes of data over longer periods of time, it is a good way of safely documenting and storing data. It is an example of how IT can help researchers conduct sound research. Many industries, government agencies and research institutes depend on iRODS to manage their data.
“We are honored to be host to the iRODS User Group Meeting and are pleased to welcome iRODS users from all over the world to our university,” says director Carolien Besselink of Information and Technology Services. “iRODS is a key element in the IT strategy for research at our university. This innovation is essential in our service to researchers and to facilitate them in their research. We have developed our own application of iRODS to manage more than a petabyte (1000 terabytes) of research data. This application is already being used in several Utrecht studies. We have had the privilege to present our developments at conferences in The Netherlands and abroad and will do so at the coming iRODS convention as well.
Executive introduction to iRODS
On 16 June 2017 Utrecht University, in cooperation with U2Connect, organises a seminar targeted at executives and managers of universities, academic hospitals, research institutes and other organisations that manage vast amounts of data. This seminar will help you to gain insights about iRODS benefits, its use cases and national service initiatives.
