ERC Day: 28 March

Utrecht University celebrates 10 years of the European Research Council

In 2017 the European Research Council will mark its 10th anniversary, an important milestone in making Europe a global centre of excellence in research. It is time for celebrations in Brussels and all across Europe and for reflection on the past decade and on the future.

Utrecht University takes part in this celebration, underling the outstanding job done so far by the Utrecht-based ERC researchers: since 2008, Utrecht University has hosted 68 ERC grants, divided in Starting Grant (allocated for five years to promising researchers who have proven that they have the potential to become independent leaders of research), ERC Consolidator Grant and the ERC Advanced Grant (to researchers whose ground-breaking work opens up new directions in their field).

Get inspired by outstanding researchers

On March 28th you will have the opportunity to meet and hear from first line ERC laureates from Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht and Hubrecht Institute and take part in an amazing day of celebration. Not only talks, but also interactive demonstrations and a tour of the research facilities.

10 years of ERC

Back in 2007, the European Commission established the European Research Council with the mission to encourage excellent frontier research in Europe through competitive funding, supporting top researchers across all fields and of any nationality.

Since then, the ERC has had a considerable impact on the European research landscape. In almost ten years, it has funded almost 7,000 researchers and thereby supporting more than 40,000 team members. Its support has been acknowledged in close to 100,000 international scientific journal articles.
