Innovation, Institutions and Societal Challenges
The Utrecht Summer School Innovation, Institutions and Societal Challenges provides you with an opportunity for interdisciplinary research training on how institutions and innovation can contribute to addressing the grand societal challenges of our time. The summer school targets graduate students who are interested in learning about the latest academic insights on innovation and institutional theory and who would like to use these insights in their academic research on successful and failed cases of institutional change and disruption by innovation. The course offers research-based seminars by leading experts in the field as well as a focus on academic skill development in conducting challenge-led research. During the course week you will work in interdisciplinary research teams to develop a research proposal on institutional disruption to address a specific challenge in the domain of sustainability, health or digital society. The course is organised in connection with Utrecht University's strategic research themes "Institutions for Open Societies" and “Pathways for Sustainability” and provides opportunities to explore research collaborations within the context of these themes.

Target group: the course is explicitly designed for an interdisciplinary group of graduate students, particularly early-stage PhD students and advanced research master student within the broad academic fields of Governance, Sustainable Development, Economics, Innovation Studies, Law, Sociology, Human Geography, Media and Culture Studies. We also consider applications of postdoctoral students and practitioners. There are a limited number of 30 spots available.

Faculty:  The course brings together faculty from Utrecht University (UU) and outside with expertise on innovation studies and institutional theory. Confirmed speakers are Flor Avelino (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Niels Bosma (UU), José van Dijck (UU), Judith van Erp (UU), Koen Frenken (UU), Lea Fuenfschilling (Lund University), Maarten Hajer (UU), Jarno Hoekman (UU), Alesandro Nuvolari (Sant'Anna, Pisa), Erik Stam (UU) and Iris Wanzenböck (UU).

ECTS: 2.5

Costs: The course is provided free of charge. Lunch will be provided as well as a diner on Monday and Thursday. Participants need to pay their own travel and accommodation and they have to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
