UGlobe Lecture: The Caribbean parts of the Netherlands

Last Wednesday, UGlobe welcomed professor Fred Soons for an interesting lecture on the constitutional position and the right to self-determination of the Caribbean parts of the Netherlands. As the full and diverse room showed, the topic is an important and fascinating one, for Dutch people as well for people from a non-Dutch origin. Professor Soons, who is an expert in public international law, started with a short overview of Dutch political history and an explanation of how the Netherlands acquired the Caribbean, after which he delved deeper into the constitutional position and the right to self-determination of the islands. The lecture ended with a lively Q&A session. Both the lecture and the Q&A showed that the topic of self-determination is not only relevant for the Netherlands, but for the contested global order as well.
