Symposium on the science-industry interface of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

On the 21st of January, the second marine Carbon Dioxide Removal symposium was organized in Utrecht by the Sustainable Ocean Community and the Arrhenius Program. The afternoon was filled with a broad variety of talks about the science-industry interface of mCDR.

The event was kicked off by keynote speaker dr. Jaime Palter of the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Palter introduced the different types of mCDR techniques from a scientific perspective. She also underlined the importance of Monitoring, Reporting and Verifiying (MRV).

The second part of the program consisted of short talks of different mCDR companies. Dr. Daan Reijnders introduced SeaO2's Electrochemical Direct Ocean Capture process. Then, dr. Jing He explained the role of her company, Isometric, as a carbon registry. The last company talk was provided by Will Burt, who explained the activities of Planetary in ocean alkalinity enhancement.

After delegates of the mCDR industry had been given the floor, dr. Haomiao Du explained the legal framework of mCDR activities; what international agreements say something about mCDR? What are things companies should keep in mind when it comes to the law? The event was concluded by a panel with all speakers present and a borrel to continue the discussion in an informal way.

In September, the third edition of the mCDR symposium series will be organized. This time, the focus will be on the view of the general public. We hope to welcome you there as well!
