Submit a project for the Pathways to Sustainability Award 2024

At Pathways to Sustainability we believe that best practices should be recognised and rewarded. We therefore launched a special Award for those research projects combining the strengths of Utrecht University research with the agendas of external stakeholders for the benefit of a sustainable future for all.

We invite you to submit that project, whether it is your own project or that of a colleague. The submission deadline is 27 September. All submitted projects will get the opportunity to be featured as a Field Story in our Transdisciplinary Field Guide. The laureate project will be announced at our annual conference on 28 November 2024. Besides the honour and recognition, this prize comes with €2500,- to further invest in the project or its follow-up.

"I thought the whole process, from submission to being elected at the conference, was a very cool and informative experience. As I recall, submitting the project was very little effort, it was a little document with a few simple questions about the impact of the project. It also got me thinking, because what is really the essence of your project? Fortunately, the jury also saw the value of my project, so I made it through to the next round along with two others. For this, we each recorded a short pitch. This was almost like a presentation course, because how do you bring your message across concisely and powerfully? I thought it was very cool and informative to practice this once. The decision on who wins the Pathways to Sustainability award is made by the conference audience, so the three pitches were displayed on the big screen after which there was a live vote. That was quite an exciting moment, but also a great opportunity to generate attention for your project. In addition, there were also lots of people who then turn to you or ask questions or offer a different perspective on your project. Actually, it's not even about the money, but it gives you new insights into what the project actually means or where it could go.’

‘I ended up using the prize money for a follow-up project, working with two artists to create a manual for climate modelers. It is intended as a tool for reflection, challenging them to think differently about the climate and humans' role in it. The prize money allowed the artists to work two months longer, so we have now achieved a great result. Winning the Pathways to Sustainability award was a huge honor for me, and the trophy is still proudly on display at the Urban Futures Studio.’
