Strengthen information literacy skills with the new Compass modules

Utrecht University Library launches two new modules of Compass, the online training course: Compass+: Historical sources and Compass+: Systematically searching for literature.

With the start module of Compass students are already able to master basic information skills (like searching, finding and quoting literature). By following the new modules, students can acquire more specialist information skills.

All the Compass modules can be found on the LifeLong Learning platform. You can use the module during (work) lectures, but these modules are ideally suited to be made at home on an individual basis (flipping the classroom). Because students can already work on their information skills at their own pace prior to the (work)lecture, there is more time left during the lecture itself to elaborate on the different skills. The new modules are currently only offered in English.

Compass+: Historical sources

This module focuses on searching for historical sources, and which steps need to be taken to find the right historical source. After completing the module, students will know what kind of historical source is needed for their research or assignment, how to find it, and how to get access to the resource. In addition, the module discusses how you can use search systems and which system offers which functionalities. The module is particularly suitable for students who are about to carry out an independent research, such as a Bachelor’s thesis.

Compass+: Systematically searching for literature

When searching for literature, for instance as part of a systematic review or meta-analysis, a systematic search is necessary, since the goal is to find as many sources as possible. But also in other cases, a systematic approach to the search can have merit: it helps to formulate what exactly you want to find and increases the chance of a good search result. The module 'Systematically searching for literature' shows which steps need to be taken when setting up and executing a systematic database search.
