State Secretary Rummenie of LVVN visits Expertise Center of Veterinary Genetics
State Secretary Jean Rummenie of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) visited the Expertise Center of Veterinary Genetics of Utrecht University, together with Lower House member Dion Graus on Monday, on December 16. They were educated about genetic disorders in dogs and cats and ways to prevent these through a healthy breeding policy.

In the outpatient clinic, the guests met Teuntje, an older pug with a short snout, and Lotta, a “healthily bred” retro pug. Owner and breeder Meranda Sterk explained how a very strong improvement in health can be achieved within one generation by inbreeding with a healthy breed. Coordinator of the Expertise Center Hille Fieten showed how veterinarians can assess and register in the PetScan system the six related criteria for short-skulled dogs.
PetScan
Petscan is the registration system that allows veterinarians throughout the Netherlands to look up and register diagnoses for diagnostic purposes, scientific research and education. PetScan is made possible in part by the partners and donors of Friends of VetMed.
