Secondary school pupils follow masterclass literature research

What is a good source? How do I find it and how can I check whether it is reliable? Pupils from various secondary schools will follow a masterclass today "Literature review: from frustration to citation."

School pupils from VWO 5 and 6 participated in the masterclass through the U-Talent programme. Because they are working on their profile paper for example, or because they are curious about how literature research works. The masterclass is given by an expert from the University Library and a lecturer from U-Talent. "You  really can’t start learning information skills early enough," says Marie-Louise Goudeau of the library. "Especially in these times of disinformation, these skills are indispensable. Writing the profile paper is therefore a suitable time to talk about this with  pupils

Special version Compass

The online training module Compass has been specially adapted for this masterclass. "We have focused  on being able to search for freely accessible sources. We have also added assignments  so students apply step by step what they have learned  to their own research," explains teacher Sanne Korte.

After the masterclass, the students will be given a tour of the, University Library Utrecht Science Park including the Special Collections department. During the tour, the students visit the map room, the digitization street and one of the depots. Although most of the students' literature research will probably initially take place online, it is of course still a great experience to be able to take a look at the  early printed and special sources of the library.
