Rubicon grant for Utrecht physics researcher Berend van der Meer
NWO grant for two years of research in Oxford
Berend van der Meer, researcher at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials, has been awarded a Rubicon grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). With this grant, Van der Meer will be able to do research for two years at the University of Oxford (UK). The Rubicon programme is intended to give young, promising scientists the opportunity to gain international research experience.
In Oxford, Van der Meer will work on the project titled 'Manipulating defects in crystals with light'. The (non-)deliberate insertion of lattice defects in crystalline materials forms the basis for many material properties. Using a strongly focused laser beam the researchers will apply defects in crystals and study their behaviour with a microscope.
