Request a Future Learning Space for semester 1 2026-2027

Do you want to use a Future Learning Space in semester 1 (2026-2027) or are you looking for a special location for learning activities in your class? Please contact fls@uu.nl or inform your faculty scheduling office which FLS you would like to use.

Due to the planning of the educational timetable, it is important to submit the application for semester 1 (2026-2027) no later than March 23th!

What is a Future Learning Space?

The standard (work)group spaces are becoming increasingly flexible, but sometimes your ideas for learning activities during your lessons do not fit in the available spaces. The layout of the room is not suitable for group work or during the learning activities you had thought of, you still run into limitations. Do you recognize this? Maybe a Future Learning Space is something for you!

A Future Learning Space is an learning environment in which, during a three-year pilot period, we explore and evaluate a new educational concept together with teachers and students. During this period, the space is available to the entire university, giving every teacher the opportunity to experiment with this concept.

In close collaboration with teachers and students, several experimental spaces have already been realized, and new innovative spaces are in the pipeline!

Learning Plaza

Learning Plaza (video): Minnaert building, room 1.25 (capacity: 150 persons)

Due to its size, the Learning plaza offers the possibility for different learning activities to take place simultaneously.

Hybrid Active Learning Classroom

Hybrid Active Learning Classroom (video): Bolognalaan 101, room 2.049 (capacity: 48) 

Hybrid Active Learning Space with 8 group tables. The layout and furniture encourage interaction among students, between student and teacher and between students and learning content. Students use whiteboards and a screen per group table. The scheduling of the HALC will go through Future Learning Spaces (as before) from semester 2.

XR-Classroom

XR-Classroom: Androclus building, O.025 (4 playgrounds ) icw O.028 (cap. 16)

Do you use Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality in your teaching, or would you like to experiment with it in a physical learning environment? In February 2026, a learning space will become available for XR education. In this room, students can take turns working with the VR or AR applications that instructors wish to offer. Outdoor Learning Space

Outdoor Learning Space: Botanical Gardens USP, Budapestlaan 17 (cap. 25p)

A learning environment in a green setting that invites interaction, activating teaching methods, and collaborative learning. The design is a unique circular structure on and above the water of the Fort moat, in the open air, with seating for 25 people. It is suitable for various activating and collaborative learning activities, without the use of technology.
Commissioning is expected during block 1 of 2026.

Completed experiments

After three years of use, FLS concludes an experiment and draws lessons for the physical learning environment as a whole. Based on an integrated evaluation (user experiences, didactic added value, needs, technology, and management), Future Learning Spaces compiles all findings into a recommendation. The following experiments will be completed before the summer of the 2026–2027 academic year. This will lead to changes in the scheduling process.

Van Lier & Eggink

Versatile (workgroup) space that supports many different forms of education. The focus of the space is on group work and "student-centered" forms of education

The experiment in this Active Learning Space, the Van Lier & Eggink Room, has been completed. This means that as of July 2026, this space will no longer be a Future Learning Space. The option for a setup as an Active Learning Space remains available. For semester 1 (S1), it can be scheduled for use by Humanities. After scheduling by this faculty, any remaining available slots will be open to lecturers from other faculties. How (and whether) the Active Learning Space will be available for use after that period will be announced at a later time. You can read more about the results of this experiment on the FLS website.

Active Learning Space

Active Learning Space (photo impression): Androclus building, room O.004 (capacity: 30p)

Active Learning Space with 5 group tables designed to optimally facilitate active, student-centered and collaborative learning. The layout and furniture stimulate student-student interaction students-teacher interaction and interaction between students and learning content. Students use whiteboards and a large screen per group table.

The experiment in this Active Learning Space (Androclus Building) has been completed. Starting from semester 1 of the 2026–2027 academic year, the room can be scheduled for courses by the faculty of Veterinary Medicine. After scheduling by DGK, any remaining available slots will be open to lecturers from other faculties. You can read more about the results of this experiment on the FLS website.
