Project IRIS Challenge: more grip on your energy bill
In collaboration with the IRIS project, the Utrecht housing corporation BO-EX is organising the IRIS project Challenge. Whoever has the best idea for tenants to get a grip on their energy bills, reduce their housing costs and thus increase their disposable income, can win 20,000 euros. Researchers from the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) are involved in drawing up the criteria and assessing the entries for the Challenge. Do you have the best idea? Then join in! As one of the partners of the IRIS project, Utrecht housing corporation Bo-Ex would like to contribute to the improvement of the financial position of its tenants. Bo-Ex rents out approximately 9,000 homes in Utrecht. A large proportion of its tenants have a relatively low income.
With this competition, the corporation is now challenging everyone to come up with proposals that will help tenants get a better grip on their energy bills, reduce their housing costs and increase their disposable income.
The competition is also result of the Lean Startup Research Project for students, in which they introduce evidence-based research methods to evaluate innovative products or services and propose improvements.
‘The Challenge is an incredibly valuable initiative,' says Loek Zanders, project manager of IRIS smart cities, 'because in this way we literally bring the project back to the level of people's homes. We make this large project as close to home as possible, aiming to provide a solution for the personal environment that also contributes to society.’

The IRIS project
The Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance hosts three groups that join forces in the IRIS lighthouse project: the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.), the Centre for Entrepreneurship (UCE) and the Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL). Together, they provide an extensive multidisciplinary basis for business modelling, financial models and institutional and governance model design, prerequisites in the transition towards smart sustainable cities.
