The Executive Board has appointed Prof. Joshua J. Coon to the post of F.C. Donders Professor. Coon is a Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and one of the most prominent researchers in Proteomics worldwide. His appointment to the F.C. Donders Chair provides a unique possibility to cooperate with him and his research group in the field of Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry.
Over the academic year 2018/2019, Prof. Coon will spend a total of five months working at Utrecht University in the research group of Prof. Albert Heck. With researchers of this group, but also with other researchers from the four research domains of Utrecht Life Sciences, Coon will work towards joint research proposals and contribute to education.
Joshua J. Coon
After his Bachelor’s in Chemistry at Central Michigan University and PhD at the University of Florida, Prof. Coon worked as a Chemistry researcher at the University of Virginia. Together with John Syka, he developed electron-transfer dissociation (ETD), a versatile technique that is now commonly used for proteomics. In 2005, he moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to start his own research group, and in 2012 he was appointed Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Chemistry.
F.C. Donders Chair
The F.C. Donders Chair was established in 1985, to stimulate cooperation with outstanding researchers who are leading in their field. Holders of the F.C. Donders Chair will inspire staff and students by contributing not only to research, but also to education at Utrecht University. The Chair was named after Franciscus Cornelis Donders (1818-1889), an internationally renowned researcher and forerunner in the field of ophthalmology and physiology.
