The "Skyscraper" artwork is being built in the Catharijnesingel in Utrecht.

The first plastic parts of the Skyscraper whale, brought here by Utrecht University, were installed on the metal frame in the Catharijnesingel in Utrecht. The eleven-meter high artwork draws attention to the problem of plastic waste in seas and rivers.

Photographer Robert Oosterbroek made photos during the construction, which can be viewed live all week on webcam. The whale will be officially unveiled this Friday. Utrecht University will offer a programme, with many lectures and activities over the next six months on sustainability, water and how science can contribute to solving these issues.
