The Executive Board has appointed Professor Paul Drijvers as Professor of Mathematics Didactics for one day a week at the Faculty of Science’s Freudenthal Institute. Drijvers is an internationally renowned authority on mathematics didactics, curriculum development and testing in particular. In addition to his appointment at the Freudenthal Institute, he will continue to work at CITO as Senior Test Expert.
Paul Drijvers (56) has been working as Associate Professor at the Freudenthal Institute since 2000. From 2008 to 2013, he coordinated the Mathematics unit and was member of the institute’s board. He also worked at the Université du Québec à Montréal was a guest lecturer at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon, France.
In addition to scientific publications, he edited two reference works on algebraic didactics and for the teacher training programme. He was a member of several leading committees, such as the national Future of Mathematics Education committee, and was responsible for the Mathematics B final exams for senior general secondary and pre-university education (HAVO & VWO) at the National Examination Board.
Drijvers’ appointment is a further strengthening of the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (FIsme) of Utrecht University’s Faculty of Science. The Institute aims to improve the quality of education in calculus, mathematics, sciences and information & computing sciences through:
research, development of expertise and sharing of knowledge in science education and didactics;
training teachers in science subjects and providing communication and educational elements in several other science programmes;
professionalization and support of science teachers and teacher networks;
providing educational materials and student activities (outreach).
