What is public engagement? How can the interaction between science and society take shape? How do these different forms of interaction interconnect? What is needed for succesful public engagement? How can public engagement be understood as part of Open Science?

These are some of the questions that can rise in conversations at Utrecht University about interaction between academic research and society. This infographic is designed to aid such conversations:

The Open Science Programme hosts a network of Public Engagement Fellows who work on exploring, implementing and evaluating a vision on pubic engagement. They exchange experiences, map good practices, initiate pilots and learn from them, and discuss fundamental and practical issues. This infographic can help with these discussions.

It shows the past on the left, the future as we envisage it on the right, and in between the driving force of the Open Science Programme shaping the future. To the left, we see the different ways in which interaction between science and society takes shape already: science communication, stakeholder engagement, etc. To the right, we see how the handshake between science and society becomes firmer as a result of a more integrated vision on how different forms of interaction connect and strengthen one another.
