NWO wants to give an extra boost to the open access availability of academic books that result from its funding. That is why NWO will make 500,000 euros a year available for the open access publication of books from 1 June 2020 onwards.

Open access to scholarly articles has become the norm. Open access availability of journal articles published by Utrecht researchers has risen to 63.2% in 2019. The transition to Open access for academic books is lagging behind though.

To promote open access for books, NWO will make 500,000 euros a year available for the open access publication of books from 1 June onwards. For academic books published as a result of NWO funding an amount of 10,000 euros is available with a limit of 10.000 euros per publication. You will find more detailed information in the ‘Open Access Books’ call.

Also Utrecht University stimulates open access for books, for instance by reimbursing 50% of the costs out of the Open Access Fund. In this way, the university supports research that is not funded by NWO. Together with a group of scientists serving as a sounding board, the Utrecht University Open Science Programme is working on further developing support to bring open access for academic books a step closer.
