Martijn Huysmans appointed new member of The Young Academy of KNAW

Martijn Huysmans

Martijn Huysmans, associate professor at the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.), has been appointed as a new member of The Young Academy. He is one of the ten new members that have been appointed; during their five-year membership, they will dedicate themselves to science as a whole, with projects on topics such as science policy and the role of science in society. The Young Academy is an independent part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).)

Martijn conducts research at the intersection of economics and political science (political economy) and teaches in the Politics, Philosophy, & Economics (PPE) bachelor programme. Two of his main research themes are EU trade policy and geopolitics.

He also studies the institutional design of the EU and other international organisations, specifically in terms of their internal rules and procedures. For example, how are decisions taken? How can dissatisfied member states leave the organisation? Huysmans is also interested in the interconnectedness of economics, trade and international politics in more specific policy domains. The European Union offers endless examples, ranging from EU protection for local products such as Champagne and Gouda Holland to the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

In 2025, together with Coen Teulings, he wrote the textbook “The Microeconomics of Market Failures and Institutions", published by Palgrave Macmillan.
