Marc Bierkens interim Dean Geosciences
The Executive Board of Utrecht University has appointed Prof. Marc Bierkens as the new interim Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences as of 1 March 2025. Bierkens currently serves as Professor of Earth Surface Hydrology, and is an affiliated researcher at Deltares. He has also filled the post of the faculty’s Vice-Dean of Research since June 2021. As interim Dean, he will take over from Wilco Hazeleger, who has been named the new Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University, effective from 27 March 2025.

The Executive Board is pleased with this temporary appointment: “We are impressed by Marc’s management qualities and look forward to a fruitful collaboration”, says Anton Pijpers, President of the Executive Board. Faculty Director Liduine Bremer adds: “I’ve grown to know Marc as an excellent fellow administrator with a perceptive eye, and I’m happy he’s agreed to take on this temporary responsibility.”
Hydrology and Water Management
Marc Bierkens (1965) earned his degree in Hydrology and Water Management at Wageningen University & Research in 1990. He went on to earn a PhD in Physical Geography at Utrecht University four years later. Prof. Bierkens studies whether enough water will be available in the future to supply the world’s growing population.
