La Permission et la Sanction - Drama and law in the late Middle Ages and early modern period

La Permission et la Sanction. Théories légales et pratiques du théâtre (XIVe-XVIIe siècle) explores the relationship between law and drama in Europe between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, in a series of articles in French and in English. The book is co-edited by Dr Katell Lavéant (French Language and Culture).

The authors study the laws and regulations used by authorities that attempted to oversee theatrical activities. They explore the relations between norm and practice, and reconsider political and religious censorship of theatre plays. Several article also consider the presentation of legal questions on stage. The legal situation of drama in France and in the Low Countries is thus re-evaluated, and a series of case-studies also consider other language areas: England, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
