P.C. Hooft Award for Literature

The P.C. Hooft Award for Literature is the most important Dutch literary prize for an oeuvre. This state prize is awarded annually, alternately for narrative prose, contemplative prose, and poetry. The 2024 prize will be awarded in the poetry category. The Literature Museum hosts the award ceremony, which usually takes place around the anniversary of P.C. Hooft’s death, 21 May.

Kila van der Starre

Kila van der Starre is specialised in modern and contemporary Dutch language poetry. In 2021, she defended her dissertation ‘Poëzie buiten het boek. De circulatie en het gebruik van poëzie’ (Poetry Off the Page. The Circulation and Use of Poetry, with an English summary), which is available online as a free e-book. Van der Starre is interested in the ways people use poetry in their everyday lives, in poetry education, and in the relationship between the medium of poetry and the meaning of poetry.

At Utrecht University, Van der Starre lectures in the bachelor’s programmes in Nederlandse taal en cultuur, Literary Studies, and Taal- en cultuurstudies, in the research master’s programme in Nederlandse literatuur en cultuur, and at the University College. In addition to her appointment at the university, Van der Starre is a freelance literary scholar.
