Jungle in the room of Daphne
The Spring Garden Weekend on 25 and 26 March 2023 is dedicated to houseplants. In the run-up to the weekend, students show their own collection of houseplants. Today: the jungle in the room of Daphne. "New leaves make me happy."
What are you studying?
I graduated as an interior designer from the ArtEZ Academy of Architecture. Currently I am on a route to retraining as a nurse.
What do you like about plants?
They give atmosphere and new leaves make me happy. I see it as a sign that I am doing somewhat well in terms of care.
How many plants do you have in your room?
Thirty, I guess. About one plant is added every month, but sometimes one dies. In my tiny student room, I had a real 'jungle' in my room, but since I moved, it is hard work to have a jungle in my flat.
What is your favourite plant and why?
The Asparagus (asparagus plant). It is my most faithful plant that perks up after every move. I got it as a small plant in a golden pot, chosen by two male colleagues with taste. The plant has since climbed all the way up to the ceiling.
Which plants would you like to expand your collection with?
I would like to keep a Caladium alive one day. Tips are welcome.
Do you have any tips for maintaining your plants?
Treat them like your child. Give them a nice toy, plenty of food and drink, and above all lots of love. All my plants have an accessory in the pot. From a wooden plant hut to a little rubber duck. It makes it extra cosy.
Do you have a favourite spot or plant in the Botanic Gardens?
The Tropical greenhouses. It's nice and warm there and the ideal place to see how your houseplants could also do in a different climate. To be jealous of!
Do you also have a jungle in your room? Share it with us on Instagram. The winner of the most beautiful 'jungle' will get to pick a beautiful houseplant during the event Jungle in your Room on 25 and 26 March.
