International whistleblowing conference organised by Utrecht University

On 20 and 21 June 2019, the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG) will be organizing the biennial conference of the International Whistleblowing Research Network (IWRN).
Ten years after the first IWRN conference, the issue of whistleblowing is still very topical and relevant, as is shown by the recent publication of the proposal for EU-wide whistleblower protection by the European Commission. If adopted, the proposal will ensure that whistleblowers in the public and private sector are given greater protection within the EU.

New developments, experiences and views on whistleblowing

The IWRN conference brings together academics, NGOs, and representatives of government institutions that play an important role in whistleblower protection from a large number of countries. During the conference, recent scientific research on whistleblowing will be presented, and participants will debate about new developments in this area.

Central themes this year are the effects of serious wrongdoing in the workplace, the costs of reporting for the whistleblower, new legal developments in the field of whistleblower protection, current social views on whistleblowing in various countries, and experiences of different organisations in dealing with whistleblowers, for example in the banking industry, government agencies and trade unions.
