Within hospitals, optimal communication is of vital importance. Communication takes place at all kinds of places and moments in the hospital between all kinds of people: from transfer moments between specialists to conversations between doctor and patient and from the preparation of readable information leaflets to electronic patient records.
Language and communication scientist Dr Tessa van Charldorp mapped out the communication challenges facing hospitals. Her research shows that there are still many obstacles to be overcome, particularly in relation to patients with low health skills and patients with various cultural backgrounds.
