Henk Westland receives the Culture of Care Lifetime Achievement Award

With an award recognising his entire body of work, Henk Westland bid farewell after 50 years to Utrecht University, where he had worked for many years as an animal caretaker and animal technician. 

Henk received the Culture of Care Lifetime Achievement Award from Pascalle van Loo, head of the Utrecht Animal Welfare Body. As a 16-year-old, Henk began taking care of the monkeys at the Uithof, which at that time housed five monkey colonies, each comprising between 30 and 60 Javanese macaques. Following the relocation of the monkeys to the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in Rijswijk, Henk moved into fish research. There, too, he devoted himself with heart and soul to the animals.
