As of 1st January 2023, Prof. Harriet Bulkeley has been appointed to Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC). Bulkeley is professor of environmental governance at Utrecht University’s Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development and Durham University in the UK.

Composed of eminent scientists and scholars, the Scientific Council establishes the work programme for the implementation of the ERC activities. Its members are appointed by the European Commission. The Chair of the Scientific Council is the President of the ERC and the formal representative of the ERC, including its Scientific Council, to the European Commission and other bodies.

Bulkeley’s appointment was made on the advice of a group of experts led by Uppsala University’s Carl-Henrik Heldin, Chairman of the Board of the Nobel Foundation. The appointment is for four years in the first instance, and renewable once.

“I am looking forward to this role and being able to contribute to furthering the role of social science in European research,” says Bulkeley.
