Hans Hoeken appointed Professor of Communication and Information Studies

As of 1 September 2015 Prof. Hans Hoeken is appointed Professor of Communication and Information Studies at Utrecht University.

Since 2007, Hoeken has been head of the department of Business Communication Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen. He has been involved with the Nijmegen university since 1998; Hoeken was an Associate Professor of Business and Communication Studies before being appointed Professor of Persuasive Communication in 2004.

Hoeken studied Dutch Language and Culture at Radboud University Nijmegen, graduating with distinction in 1989. He was subsequently attached to the Discourse Study Group of Tilburg University. His dissertation was published in 1995, titled The Design of Persuasive Texts

Research

In his research, Hoeken focuses on questions such as how argumentation and narratives can influence people’s opinions and behaviour. Recently, he has published on the role of emotions in the persuasion process in the Journal of Communication and on lay people’s criteria for evaluating argument quality in Thinking & Reasoning.
