Film series Science & Fiction: Back to the future

Themabeeld filmreeks Science & Fiction 2025: een persoon die twee kanten tegelijk op loopt

The future is repeating itself. Labour market crises, climate concerns, polarisation, the rise of extreme parties and exciting, technological developments. But: haven't we experienced this before? How revolutionary is this? In the 15th year of the film series Science & Fiction, Louis Hartlooper Complex and USG are screening four special films that will make you reflect on this, with the theme: Terug naar de toekomst (Back to the Future). We start on Tuesday 13 May 2025 with a special classic: Fahrenheit 451 (François Truffaut, 1966) and an introduction by Merijn Bruijnes. This will be followed by three more evenings of stimulating science and films of significance.

Please note: all films are English spoken (except for El Perro Que no Calla) but the introductions are in Dutch.

Science & Fiction: Back to the future

The future repeats itself. Labour market crises, climate concerns, polarisation in society, conspiracy theories and the rise of extreme parties in politics. What is in store for us? In any case, we live in a time of exciting, technological developments that may reshape our future. Some people feel threatened by change or experience loss. Others see in solutions in change, opportunities, even limitless possibilities perhaps. Haven't we experienced this before? How revolutionary is the growing influence of algorithms, artificial intelligence or automation really? What are the implications for our trust in government and politics in times of uncertainty? In short, Science & Fiction goes ‘Back to the Future’. Are we standing with our back to the past or rather to the future?

In this edition, a young generation of scientists gives their perspective on this. Come and watch, come and listen and join the discussion on one (or all) of these four evenings.

Science & Fiction: stimulating science and films of significance

Science & Fiction brings together stimulating science and films of significance. The series is an initiative of Louis Hartlooper Complex and Utrecht University School of Governance (USG). In the spirit of film ‘explicateur’ Louis Hartlooper, researchers from Utrecht University will give a short introduction to each film. Afterwards, visitors can talk to them.
