Erik van Sebille and the Plastic Soup

Plastic afval

Oceanographer and UYA-member dr. Erik van Sebille has recently been in the news with his research on plastic that is polluting the ocean, also known as 'the plastic soup'.  He was recently featured in Dutch papers (The Algemeen Dagblad, DUIC) and he has also written an op-ed for Euractiv on tracking the movement of plastic litter in the ocean.  To read the column, click here.

Somehow, being a plastic ocean scientist seems to be the easiest job in the world, because we just find this stuff wherever we go. We hardly need to look for it anymore. What is even more scary is that for all their staggering size, the vast areas of accumulated plastic floating on the surface account probably for only one percent of all plastic that has ever entered the ocean.
