English edition of book about The New Utrecht School presented at the farewell of Arno Hoes
At the farewell of Arno Hoes, an updated English edition of a book on The New Utrecht School was presented. The publication highlights the ambition to further develop and share the Utrecht academic tradition internationally.
During the reception marking the farewell of Arno Hoes, an updated English edition of the book De Nieuwe Utrechtse School: Historische traditie en hedendaagse aanpak was presented to him. The original volume describes the New Utrecht School as an intellectual and academic tradition rooted in Utrecht’s historical legacy, while explicitly oriented toward contemporary challenges in science, education, and society.
In the new English-language edition, The New Utrecht School: Historical tradition and contemporary approaches, this vision has been revised and updated with the aim of making the Utrecht intellectual tradition accessible to an international academic audience. Particular attention has been paid to the interdisciplinary approach, academic formation, and the role of critical and reflective thinking in addressing complex societal and medical issues.
Alignment with academic leadership
The decision to present this English edition to Arno Hoes closely aligns with his role as Vice-Chair of the Executive Board and Dean of UMC Utrecht. Throughout his term in office, he consistently championed academic quality, educational innovation, and the integration of clinical practice, research, and broader societal reflection. This commitment strongly reflects the core values of the New Utrecht School, which he has actively supported over the years.
A day devoted to reflection and exchange
The presentation took place at the conclusion of a day devoted to reflection, exchange, and interdisciplinarity. The farewell programme on December 11th comprised a symposium at UMC Utrecht, Arno Hoes’s farewell lecture at the Academy Building, and a closing reception at the Geertekerk in Utrecht. With this presentation, the New Utrecht School expressed its appreciation for Arno Hoes and reaffirmed its ambition to further develop and promote the Utrecht academic tradition on an international level.
