Eight nominations for Thesis Awards Humanities

For the faculty thesis awards of Humanities, eight theses from the departments and research institutes have been nominated this year:

  • Maaike Aans - Make a Memory. An investigation into the different cultural rituals and conventions of families mourning the loss of a child (Dutch title: Make a Memory. Een onderzoek naar de verschillende culturele rituelen en conventies bij gezinnen in rouw na het verlies van een kind)
  • Maud Groenendijk - Unwrapping the John Lewis Christmas ads: A textual analysis of the construction of authenticity in the Christmas ads of the British department store John Lewis (Dutch title: Unwrapping the John Lewis Christmas ads: Een tekstuele analyse van de constructie van authenticiteit in de Christmas ads van het Britse warenhuis John Lewis)
  • Alex Verbeek - The System of Animals: Imperial Hunting, Trophies, Photography and the Logic of Collecting
  • Hugo Zijlstra - Equality for All? Discursive Anthropomorphic Framing in Social Robotics


The Thesis Awards will be presented during the festive opening of the faculty year on Tuesday 5 September at 4 pm in Leeuwenbergh. The opening lecture will be held by art historian Prof Dr Koen Ottenheym, after which the winners of the best theses of the past year are announced.
