Edward Brans professor of Sustainability and Environmental Liability as of 1 November
As of 1 November 2020, Dr. Edward Brans has been appointed professor by special appointment of Sustainability and Environmental Liability at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance at Utrecht University. This is a Endowed Chair, made possible by Pels Rijcken & Droogleever Fortuijn.
Edward Brans has extensive experience in both science and the legal profession. He is currently a Counsel at Pels Rijcken law firm and civil-law notary firm.
He previously taught private law at VU Amsterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam. Brans is a specialist in the field of environmental law and both administrative and private liability law. Colleagues and students will benefit from his extensive practical and process experience and thorough knowledge of many current sustainability themes (liability climate change, making heat supply more sustainable, flooding and shortages).
He obtained his PhD in 2001 at Erasmus University Rotterdam with a dissertation entitled "Liability for Damage to Public Natural Resources. Standing, Damage and Damage Assessment ", a theme that still closely ties in with the research programme of the Center for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law at Utrecht University, where the chair will be housed.
However, his input will not be limited to this and collaboration is foreseen with other research groups and departments, both within and outside the department and the faculty. Brans will be part of the department of Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Legal Theory.
Brans combines his endowed professorship with his position at Pels Rijcken.
