Diversity & Inclusion Award for Young Women in Geoscience and for Women in Information and Computing Sciences

The Diversity & Inclusion Award winners with vice president Annetje Ottow

During the New Year's Reception of the Executive Board on Monday 6 January 2020, Vice President Annetje Ottow presented the second Diversity & Inclusion Award to Young Women in Geoscience and to Women in Information and Computing Sciences.

Gender balance

The review commission of the Diversity & Inclusion Award was very impressed with the way in which both networks devote themselves to the promotion of the gender balance within their departments, faculties and even beyond.

YWOG and WICS organise activities in order to create a broader awareness, such as by sharing experiences from women in academia. The members of the two networks devote themselves to improve inclusion so everyone can feel at home. They also strive for more female talent moving up, from PhDs to professors.

The many supporting letters that the review commission had the pleasure to receive showed that both female and male colleagues are proud of these bottom-up initiatives.

Both networks each receive a sum of € 2,500.00, to be spent within Utrecht University on diversity and inclusion.

Award

The Diversity & Inclusion Award is created to ask for attention and express appreciation for the many initiatives by students and employees to promote diversity and inclusion at Utrecht University.

The review commission, consisting of Leoniek Wijngaards, Nava Gaddam, Simone Aumaj and Brigitte Prieshof, is impressed with all of the eleven nominated candidates. These are all fantastic initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion in education, research and social involvement.

All nominated candidates were reviewed based on innovation values, continuity and connecting qualities of the provided efforts. The review process also paid attention to the degree in which each initiative is in line with the Strategic Plan 2016-2020 and the action directives of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force.

From the eleven nominated candidates, the review commission selected a top 4 of nominees: Honours Trajectum Utrecht, services for women who are breastfeeding, WICS and YWOG.
