Complex Systems Fund proposal call (3 PhD positions)

It is our pleasure to announce that Dr. ir. Peter Koeze has decided to renew the Complex Systems Fund, which he established in 2015 at the Utrecht University Fund, for the period 2025-2028 with an amount sufficient to cover the appointment of 3 new PhD candidates.

We cordially invite all our (potential) Associate Members to submit a research proposal for such a PhD project following the template. The following conditions apply:

  1. A CCSS Associate Member may be involved in only one proposal.
  2. The proposal should be a collaboration between at least two CCSS Associate Members from different faculties at UU, where at least one of them is from the Faculty of Science. There needs to be a focus on complex systems science and a strong sense of interdisciplinarity and clear value shown for all (co-)applicants of the proposal.
  3. The PhD student (although appointed at the department of the PI of the proposal) will work permanently at the CCSS and all meetings related to the project will take place at the CCSS.  A number of activities around the PhD project will be organized by the (co-)PIs, also involving members of their broader research groups not directly related to the PhD project.
  4. The Teaching and Supervision Agreement (TSA) of the PhD has to be approved by the board of the CCSS.
  5. The evaluation of the proposals will be done by Robbert Jan Feunekes, Qingyi Feng, Henk Dijkstra and Peter Koeze and a presentation/interview by the PIs of shortlisted proposals will be part of the selection procedure. The final decision will be made by the board of the Utrecht University Fund.

The timeline is the following:

  • January 15, 2025: deadline for submission of proposals
  • February 1 - March 1, 2025: presentations/interviews
  • March 15, 2025: announcement of granted proposals
  • October 1, 2025: start of projects

Please send your proposals by January 15, 2025 to ccss@uu.nl.

Further questions can be directed to the CCSS coordinator, Dr. ir. Qingyi Feng (q.feng@uu.nl).
