Colonial history in the archives of professor of botany Friedrich Went
New collection story on the website of Special Collections
As part of her fellowship History of Utrecht University Daniëlle de Kurver dived into the archives of professor of botany Friedrich Went (1863-1935) in the university library last winter.
Between 1900 and 1903 he took part in various expeditions to Suriname. Daniëlle’s research makes clear how in these expeditions the development of scientific knowledge was closely intertwined with colonial power structures and economic interests.
Science as a process
In the archives it was not so much Went’s scientific findings that drew her attention, but the insights the archival records offered into science as a process: “The documents on preparation, fund-raising, expectations, and implementation provide insight into the framework within which scientific knowledge was developed, the interests at stake, and the people involved. Reading between the lines of these reports makes clear just how dependent the expeditions were on the assistance of local communities.”
