Every two years, the board of the Pieter van Foreest Foundation makes a prize available in the field of the medical humanities, namely the history, ethics, philosophy, anthropology and public communication of medicine, public health and care. The prize is expressly intended to encourage young talent in these research areas. The authors of the nominated research projects will also receive a non-binding grant for follow-up research.

Target groups for the 2023 science prize
Master’s students and junior researchers who have not received a PhD, and who, by having completed a Master’s thesis in the period 1 Jan 2021 to 1 Jan 2023, have shown exceptional scientific talent, are eligible for the prize in 2023. Entries must take place on the recommendation of an associate professor or professor.

Rules for the award
The nominations of candidates for the award, including the digital entries of the corresponding Master’s theses, must be sent to the jury chair before April 15, 2023. The entries are judged by a jury whose four members come from various disciplines. The assessment will be based on content quality and originality. The jury will make a proposal for nominations to the board of the Pieter van Foreest Foundation.

Composition of the jury
Sadaf Soloukey Tbalvandany (PhD student Erasmus MC, prize winner 2020), Dr. Hieke Huistra (UD Medical History UU), Prof. Mariëtte van der Hoven (Professor of Medical philosophy and ethics, VUmc), dr. Toine Pieters from the Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University.

Presentation of the prize
The presentation of the main prize of 4000 euros and of the two runner-up prizes of 1000 euros each euro will take place in November 2023 at the Association’s annual symposium for Philosophy and Medicine (VFG).
