Call for Papers: PhD and Early Career Workshop: EU Trade in a Shifting Landscape

In the framework of Utrecht University Law School’s RENFORCE research programme, we are organizing a one-day workshop geared towards doctoral students or early career researchers (within three years of having completed their PhD) to present their research and receive feedback from members of the RENFORCE Building Block on ‘EU Values in International Trade’ and other Utrecht University faculty members. The workshop will take place on 15 December 2023 at Utrecht University's downtown campus.
We are inviting submissions that engage with the various legal aspects of the EU’s trade and investment policy, be it in EU law or international law. Possible topics include the compatibility of recently enacted unilateral trade instruments or recent developments in EU sanctions practices with EU (primary) law (division of competences, choice of legal basis, fundamental rights, questions of dispute resolution and effective judicial protection…) or international law (WTO law, international responsibility, countermeasures, jurisdiction, principle of non-intervention...), (comparative) legal analyses focused on the governance of EU trade policy, as well as interdisciplinary contributions that connect legal and social science literatures, including on the ‘geopoliticization’ or the ‘securitization’ of trade and investment policy in the EU. Critical perspectives are very much encouraged.
