Johan Willem (Wim) Beyen (1897–1976) was an alumnus from the Utrecht University Faculty of Law, now the School of Law. From 1952 – 1956 he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Wim Beyen is regarded one of the founding fathers of the European Union. In the early fifties he developed a plan for a European Common Market in combination with a political community.
In 2016 the first Johan Willem Beyen Lecture was held with dr. Bernard Bot, former Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Johan Willem Beyen Lecture is organised by the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, with the support of the EU Hub of Utrecht University's strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies.
