Per September 1, prof. dr. Alexandre Bonvin has been appointed as the new scientific director of the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University. He takes over this responsibility from prof. Marc Baldus, who has been the scientific director since 2016.
The Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research studies how biomolecules function in cells and how they behave in health and disease. The focus of the center is on the relation between the structure and function of biomolecules and their interactions inside the living cell.
Alexandre Bonvin is professor of Computational Structural Biology, focusing on dissecting, understanding and predicting biomolecular interactions at the molecular level. Het is in particular known for his development of HADDOCK, a software package for integrative modelling of biomolecular complexes that is used by thousands of researchers world-wide and is a core software under the EU BioExcel Center of Excellence in Computational Biomolecular Research. He was director of Chemistry education from February 2009 until February 2012 and vice head of the Chemistry Department from 2010 until April 2012. He is participating in several EU projects and is leading the WeNMR thematic services under the European Open Science Cloud - Hub project (EOSC-Hub). His work has resulted in over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
