Albert Heck receives American Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry Award
International honour for pioneering the study of viruses and complex biomolecules
Professor Albert Heck has received one of the highest international honours in mass spectrometry. Today, during the annual conference of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) in San Diego, he was presented with the Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry Award. The award honours his groundbreaking research on viruses and other complex biological systems.
The award is named after Nobel Prize winner John B. Fenn. Fenn’s development of electrospray ionization revolutionized the field of mass spectrometry and made modern biomolecular mass analysis possible. Awarded since 1990, it is regarded as the most prestigious recognition in the field of mass spectrometry.
“This recognition is very special,” says Heck, who emphasizes both the scientific legacy behind the award and the collaborative nature of the work. “John Fenn described in his Nobel lecture how he with electrospray made ‘elephants fly’. Without his invention of electrospray ionization all our work would not have been possible. The award is also rarely given to non-Americans, which makes it especially meaningful at a time when international scientific collaboration is under pressure.”
Research group
At Utrecht University, Heck leads a research group focused on the development and application of mass spectrometry technologies. What makes the group unique is that it combines expertise in both structural biology and proteomics. Its structural biology work has advanced the understanding of large molecular systems such as viruses, antibodies and advanced biopharmaceuticals. In parallel, its proteomics research has helped scientists unravel how proteins work together inside cells.
Team effort
Heck stresses that the achievements leading to the award are based on contributions of many researchers, technical staff and other collaborators over the years. “While this award will be presented to me, I directly want to acknowledge the contributions of so many people in my lab at the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University, and our many collaborators from academia and industry.”
Broad impact and versatility
ASMS also highlighted the broad impact and versatility of Heck’s research. In addition to advances in structural biology, his group has pioneered multiple technologies in proteomics, including new methods for protein analysis and biomolecular characterization.
For Heck, those different research directions are closely connected. “I am also happy that ASMS acknowledged the versatility of our work in both biomolecular mass spectrometry and proteomics. All these projects are equally dear for me, and all tightly connected through my love for mass spectrometry.”
