Afterword Migration and Societal Change Conference
On June 22 and 23 2023 more than 200 migration scholars gathered in Utrecht to discuss the topic of migration and societal change. Four key note lectures by internationally renowned academics were given on the topic of solidarity in irregular migration (Prof. Sheldon Zhang, the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at University of Massachusetts), the digital welfare state (Prof Anne Kaun, Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University Sweden), on EU migration law (Prof Tesseltje de Lange, Professor of European Migration Law and Director at Centre for Migration Law (CMR) at the Radboud University Nijmegen) and on the topic of engaged scholarship (Prof. Halleh Ghorashi, Professor of Diversity and Integration in the Department of Sociology at the VU Amsterdam). Next to the keynote lectures there were over 30 panels and workshops available for attendees to participate in. As a side event we offered a slavery walk and a migrantour in the city of Utrecht.
The audience was mixed in disciplinary backgrounds and career stages and there were also practitioners and policymakers who engaged in the debates. We want to thank all the presenters and participants for their contributions and lively and engaging discussions.
