29 nominations by students for university Teacher Awards

To stimulate teachers to continuously improve their teaching and reward them, Utrecht University has granted the annual Teaching Awards since 1994. Teachers that are starting out can be nominated for the Teacher Talent Award, and senior teachers for the Outstanding Teacher Award. The Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning (CAT) received no less than 29 nominations from students.

This year, teachers could be nominated until 15 November 2024 by the study associations of their programme. 16 teachers were nominated for the Outstanding Teacher Award and 13 teachers were nominated for the Teacher Talent Award. The nominations are compiled by the students of the study association. They write a reasoned recommendation about the teacher they nominate. In addition, the nominated teacher writes a teaching vision and provides a CV. Finally, two colleagues are asked to write a letter of recommendation. Last year, Gerard van der Ree won the Outstanding Teacher Award and Gerrit Verweij the Teacher Talent Award out of a total of 33 nominated teachers.

The nominations will be read by the jury in the coming weeks. In mid-January, they will nominate several teachers for both awards and then choose one winner per category. The jury is chaired by dr. Gery Nijenhuis. Besides the chair, the jury consists of teachers from all faculties and the two students who wrote the winning nomination last year.

The nominations will be announced at the end of January. On 6 March 2025 at the OnderwijsFestival the winners will be presented and the awards will be awarded. During the Dies Natalis on 26 March 2025, the winners will be highlighted. Are you also curious to know who will receive this year's awards? Come to the OnderwijsFestival or keep a close eye on intranet that day.
