''The wide range of (elective) courses in the Master's is very nice, because you can always choose a specialisation or course that suits your interests.''

In the Master’s programme I have chosen the Urban Geography specialisation. In this specialisation all geographical topics related to, for example daily life and public spaces are discussed. This means that a lot of geographic themes are covered, which will provide you with broadly applicable knowledge. I really like applying everything we learn in the practical field, so I am looking forward to the international fieldtrip!

What I like the most during this Master's degree is that you work with students from all kinds of other Bachelor's programmes, so that you always work with multiple perspectives and backgrounds in group assignments. In addition, the wide range of (elective) courses in the Master's is very nice, because you can always choose a specialisation or course that suits your interests. This way, you develop a very broad knowledge, which you can apply in the professional field! I am therefore looking forward to start working at, for example, the municipality or a consultancy, so that I can apply my broad knowledge in the field and specialize even better in certain fields of interests.

‘’The role of geography always draws my attention because of my natural awareness of the physical environment.’’

I decided to study this Master’s because it has the possibility to choose a direction. In my Bachelor’s Sociale geografie en planologie I did not like urban geography that much. I found it much more interesting to learn about the influence of geography on economies and visa versa. I picked the specialisation Economic Geography. This direction focuses on the role of entrepreneurs, companies and cities. The role of geography always draws my attention because of my natural awareness of the physical environment, this is something a lot of geography students tend to have.

The classes are very diverse and interactive. Especially with the economical geography direction the classes are small and there is a lot of attention for the individual student during the classes. After the studies I aim for a job in location consultancy or the real estate market. Both are very interesting to me and are connected to the things you learn during the Master’s.

Please note: These students followed the Master’s programme Human Geography. As of September 2023 this Master’s programme is called Urban and Economic Geography.
