Lotte Grünwald - Graduated 2023

Track: Earth System Governance

Current position: Executive Assistant at Atmosfair

Can you briefly tell us what you studied (including your specialisation) and when you graduated?

I studied Sustainable Development with a specialisation in Earth System Governance. I graduated in Summer 2023.

How has your study influenced your career path, and what role has it played in your professional development?

During my studies, I learned a lot about the crucial role that civil society plays in addressing global environmental challenges. Combating climate change requires a systemic approach that goes beyond government action. NGOs play a key role in bridging gaps between science, policy, and society, and in fostering innovative solutions. This realisation reinforced my decision to join a climate protection NGO in Berlin after graduating.

Could you provide an example of a specific project or experience during your studies that significantly contributed to your growth and success in your current career?

During a transdisciplinary case study on enhancing biodiversity with biocontrol agents, we worked together with a company to analyse the ecological, socioeconomic, and policy considerations necessary when leveraging biological control agents as an alternative to pesticides in EU agroecosystems. This experience was pivotal because it required collaboration with individuals from diverse academic backgrounds and the private sector, fostering a holistic approach to problem-solving and providing valuable insights into the complexity of decision-making processes. The project equipped me with practical skills and a collaborative mindset necessary for my career in a climate protection NGO that collaborates with private sector actors.

What were the key skills or knowledge you gained during your studies, and how do you apply them in your work now?

The most crucial skill I gained during my studies was researching climate policy. This research expertise is crucial in my current role, where I analyse developments in the voluntary carbon market and have to navigate through diverse, sometimes overlapping regulations and frameworks. Understanding the language and complexities of regulations like the EU's CSRD and Green Claims Directive or of SBTi requirement helps me ensure our projects align with current policy developments. My ability to interpret policy documents and assess their impact on climate strategies enables me to effectively contribute to our NGO's climate protection efforts - and communicate with private sector actors.

How were you able to differentiate yourself in the job market thanks to your education at our university?

Thanks to my education at UU, I was able to differentiate myself in the job market through my specialised knowledge, my practical experience as well as my soft skills.

Do you have any specific memories of teachers, courses, or extracurricular activities that left a lasting impression on you?

One such memory is from the "Foundations of Earth System Governance Research” course. The topics covered were not only incredibly current but also highly motivating right from the beginning. Additionally, participating in a student coalition project during my master's thesis was both innovative and collaborative. The experience taught me the importance of teamwork, creativity, and adaptability in tackling complex issues.

Can you share a moment when you encountered challenges during your studies and how you dealt with them?

During the initial phase of my master's thesis, I found myself feeling overwhelmed with specifying my topic. However, I addressed this challenge by seeking support from my study colleagues and maintaining open and clear communication with my thesis supervisor. Their guidance and encouragement helped me navigate through the difficulties and regain my confidence, ultimately leading to a successful thesis proposal.

How has your study at our university contributed to your personal growth and development, alongside your professional success?

The rigorous academic environment challenged me to push beyond my limits, fostering resilience and a growth mindset. Interacting with diverse peers and faculty members broadened my perspective and enhanced my interpersonal skills.

Would you recommend other prospective students to pursue the same programme?

Yes, I would. For students interested in the political realm of sustainable development and especially for students who are interested in developing their research skills in that field the masters degree is a great choice.

What advice would you like to give to current students?

Balancing academics, extracurricular activities, social life, and personal time can be challenging. Develop good time management skills early on to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
