On this page, you will find information about career opportunities in both academic and non-academic fields. As a graduate of the Sustainable Business and Innovation programme, you will be trained to become a sustainability change agent within commercial organisations, industries, NGOs, and government bodies. You may also choose to continue your academic career through research at a university.
Academic careers
This Master’s programme provides a strong foundation for a research-oriented career. Several Sustainable Business and Innovation graduates have continued as PhD candidates after completing the programme. You will be well prepared to pursue a PhD in fields related to corporate sustainability, sustainable innovation, and governance.
Non-academic careers
As a graduate with the knowledge and skills to develop sustainable business practices, you will have strong career prospects across a wide range of sectors and industries. If you aspire to become a sustainability change agent in roles such as sustainability officer, sustainability consultant, or sustainability manager within a business, government agency, or other organisation, this programme offers excellent preparation.
You will be equipped to work in organisations seeking to transform their strategies and operations towards sustainability. Sustainable Business and Innovation graduates have gone on to work in roles such as Product Manager, Sustainability Coordinator, Trainer or Coach, and Management Trainee.

Career development
Academic and professional knowledge and skills
This Master’s programme is designed to support you in preparing for your future career. You will combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience through guest lectures, real-world business cases, consultancy projects, and close collaboration with companies. As the programme progresses, you will spend increasing amounts of time applying your knowledge in professional settings, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
This practical experience will help you understand the challenges organisations and sectors face in transitioning towards more sustainable forms of innovation and production. It will also enable you to build professional experience and strengthen your CV during your studies.
Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to:
- demonstrate substantial knowledge of sustainability and business practices;
- select and apply corporate sustainability tools and strategies to support more sustainable business operations;
- analyse sustainability challenges from both business and societal perspectives;

UU Careers Day
Once a year Utrecht University organises a Careers Day. The Careers Day offers the opportunity to sign up for workshops and trainings, and to meet recruiters at the careers fair. It’s also possible to join a job application training or have your resume checked.
